The mystery of Kelvin Grove
Most people will be familiar with the suburb of Kelvin Grove in Brisbane. However, several people have found that some early birth and marriage certificates in the Mackay district have this place name recorded on them. Joyce Jensen solved the mystery when she read The Historical Review of Koumala and District in the Mackay City Library. This book shows that Kelvin Grove was an early pastoral run and also the first name of the Koumala district and Koumala township. The Post Office changed to the new name of Koumala about 1885. However, the use of the name Kelvin Grove continued in common usage for many years, being used in 1896 in the application for a railway and in 1899 in the application for a school.
